Reading List

The list below includes only "highly recommended" reading, and we're talking reading as in "books" here. While the Energy Guy Web site is full of links to pages with plenty of reading material, a book can be read even when the power is off - as well as most anywhere you go without a computer!

The Consumer's Guide to Effective Environmental Choices
This book would be a great textbook for use in a class I would call "Environmentalism 101A." If you've ever wondered what things consumers do that have a huge environmental impact, versus those things that are so small as to be "lost in the noise," this book is for you! It is mandatory reading for anyone who cares about the environment.

DEVELOPMENT BY PEOPLE - Citizen Construction of a Just World
Is "development" really a bad word? Not if it means food, water and shelter for people! Not if it's "sustainable development!" But how can we change from the current paradigm (primarily profit-driven) to a new one, driven by people's needs with benefits for everyone involved? This book provides the answer to that question and, perhaps most importantly, the process to get there. It's all about empowerment through a process called "participatory democracy." This book is a "must read" for anyone involved with development! Written by Guy Gran, 1983, Praeger, New York.

Stormy Weather: 101 Solutions to Global Climate Change
If you follow climate change science like I do, you've probably noticed something unusual about most of the climate change skeptics characterized as "experts." The same handful of "experts" seem to continue to pop up on all the "skeptic sites." This excellent book covers these "Carbon Minstrels" as well as a number of other "Carbon Baron" categories -
* The Carbon Journalists - those who print garbage science under the delusion of "balance"
* The Carbon Protectors - you know - oil companies, conservative "think tanks" funded by oil companies....
..there are also chapters on the Carbon Lobbists, Politicians, and Bankers. This book is mandatory reading for anyone who cares about the environment, not to mention a sustainable economy and energy-independence.
