An Ounce Of Prevention . . .
Ray Darby, P.E. - December, 1997

The Union seems to dredge up a real lop-sided preponderance of "anti-global-warming" sentiment (like little lists of scientists from the "minority camp"). Prove this to yourself with some research at the library or on the internet and weigh the scientific viewpoints "for" and "against." Personally, I hope "global warming" turns out to be a bunch of "liberal hooey." In the meantime, the MAJORITY of scientists are honestly concerned! Could they all be part of some conspiracy? Fortunately, most people have relatives or friends who ARE these scientists, helping to assure the rest of us they're not "socialist plants."

In the meantime, consider that "a sustainable society is one that satisfies the needs of the present generation without sacrificing those of future generations." What are your thoughts regarding fossil fuel resources we have left compared to other countries, and how much we currently (and other countries are projected to) use from these sources? Consider the extent of your contribution to a sustainable future and then decide what to do (or write about) in your spare time.

Regarding "economic devastation" from global warming treaties, the vast majority of energy scientists believe the U.S. wastes over half the energy it consumes given cost-effective alternatives now available. That's another common fact that continually surfaces with a little research. I'm working consciously and cost-effectively toward greater sustainability for myself and others through my work and life, and proud of it.

As for political leanings, I'm a card carrying member of the "Ounce Of Prevention Is Worth A Pound Of Cure" school of thought. My Kin came over on The Mayflower, one signed the Declaration Of Independence, and I want my children to inherit a strong America. It's time to exercise our good ole American ingenuity and focus on creating a more sustainable "quality of life" for our kids, global warming or not. That's where I'm "coming from." Where are the letter writers to The Union "coming from," who degrade fundamental issues of responsibility into a "liberal plot," or "religious blasphemy?"
